The Art of Understanding Diamonds

Discover the four essential elements of diamond excellence. A refined guide to choosing a diamond where exceptional quality meets individuality.

THE FOUR Cs

Four Elements of Excellence

The beauty of every diamond is defined by a unique combination of Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. Known as the 4Cs, these characteristics form the internationally recognized foundation of diamond quality assessment.

01 · CUT

Cut — The Art of Brilliance

Cut defines how beautifully a diamond interacts with light. The precision of its facets and proportions reveals the captivating brilliance that makes each diamond extraordinary.

✧

Brilliance

The reflection of white light that creates captivating brightness.

✧

Fire

Beautiful flashes of spectral colors within the diamond.

✧

Scintillation

The interplay of sparkle and contrast as the diamond moves.

Grade Description
ExcellentExceptional cut quality
Very GoodVery strong light performance
GoodGood cut quality
FairReduced light performance
PoorNoticeably diminished brilliance

The GIA Excellent–Poor cut grading scale applies to standard round brilliant diamonds in the D–Z color range. Fancy shapes are assessed differently.

LINÁLI INSIGHT — An exceptional cut can make a diamond appear more brilliant than a larger stone with less precise proportions.
02 · COLOR

Color — The Purity of Light

Diamond color refers to the presence or absence of yellow or brown tones. The GIA scale ranges from D, representing colorless diamonds, to Z, indicating a visible light yellow or brown tint.

D–F Colorless
G–J Near Colorless
K–M Faint
N–R Very Light
S–Z Light

Color swatches are illustrative only and do not reproduce an exact diamond grading reference.

Color Category Appearance
D–FColorlessExceptional absence of color
G–JNear ColorlessMinimal visible warmth
K–MFaintNoticeable warm tint
N–RVery LightMore pronounced color
S–ZLightDistinct yellow or brown tint
LINÁLI INSIGHT — D–F diamonds are prized for their colorless appearance, while G–J grades can offer an elegant balance of beauty and value.
03 · CLARITY

Clarity — Beauty Within

Clarity evaluates the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes within a diamond. Expert grading is performed under 10× magnification.

Grade Classification Description
FL Flawless No inclusions or blemishes visible at 10×
IF Internally Flawless No inclusions visible at 10×
VVS1–VVS2 Very, Very Slightly Included Inclusions extremely difficult to detect
VS1–VS2 Very Slightly Included Minor inclusions
SI1–SI2 Slightly Included Noticeable inclusions under magnification
I1–I3 Included Obvious inclusions that may affect appearance or durability
LINÁLI INSIGHT — Many VS diamonds and some SI diamonds appear eye-clean. The position and visibility of inclusions can matter as much as the grade itself.
04 · CARAT WEIGHT

Carat — A Measure of Rarity

Carat measures a diamond's weight rather than its physical dimensions. Its visible size also depends on shape, proportions and depth.

1 CARAT = 0.20 g The Standard Unit of Diamond Weight
Carat Weight Weight in Grams
0.50 ct0.10 g
1.00 ct0.20 g
1.50 ct0.30 g
2.00 ct0.40 g
3.00 ct0.60 g
5.00 ct1.00 g
LINÁLI INSIGHT — A higher carat weight does not necessarily mean a more beautiful diamond. True excellence lies in the harmony of all four characteristics.
